Super Kids Play Club Offers Recreation, Fun and Learning to Kids Of All Abilities

Did you know that Parks and Recreation has a new program for kids of all ability levels? The Super Kids Play Club, which takes place the first Saturday of the month at 10:00 a.m. at the Daniel Webster Memorial Children’s Park at Wyoming and Copper, brings kids with and without disabilities together for a chance to play, learn, and make new friends. Kids are provided with a free snack. Local Authors Sought for Library-Hosted Author Fair in November

The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Library is hosting a local author fair in November and is looking for local writers to participate! All published and self-published authors (fiction, non-fiction, local history, young adult, and children’s books) are eligible and encouraged to apply. This is a terrific opportunity to promote your individual works, interact with the community and other local writers, and sign and sell copies of your book. Bernalillo County Health Council Hosts International Overdose Awareness Day

International Overdose Awareness Day takes place Thursday, August 31, and seeks to raise awareness of opioid addiction and opioid-related deaths from substances such as heroin, prescription medications; and how naloxone distribution and treatment can help. A networking reception takes place at 12:00 noon  at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, and is hosted by the Bernalillo County Health Council. Volunteer Opportunity of the Week

The Team Kirtland Home Away from Home sponsors “Adopt an Airman,” a terrific program that matches first-term Airmen and enlisted students at Kirtland Air Force Base with volunteer civilian host families. For many of these military soldiers, it can be their first time away from home and families can offer friendship, mentoring and engagement with larger groups. Host families provide home-cooked meals, recreational activities such as Lobo or Isotopes games, recreation such as hiking, fishing, or golf. UNM Center for Southwest Research Brings Lecture Series “People and Places” to Albuquerque

A series of free monthly lectures will take place through December on UNM Main Campus Zimmerman Library, from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. The lectures will cover a range of topics dealing the history, philosophy and culture of New Mexico and the U.S. West. BioPark Construction Updates Available Online

The ABQ BioPark is under construction to upgrade several Zoo features, including the cool Penguin Chill, a new Bird Annex, and the Colores Kid’s Playground. With all this activity, there are some closed exhibits right now, and some traffic detours around the Zoo. Labor Day City Closures and Services Available

Labor Day is Monday, Sept. 4, and most City offices, including the Office of Neighborhood Coordination, will be closed that day. However, services such as recycling, curbside trash pickup, and the BioPark Aquarium, Zoo and Botanic Gardens are available.
