Subject: N. Domingo Baca Park - 11-29-06 Public Advisory Committee Meeting
Summary
THIS EMAIL IS BEING SENT ON BEHALF OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE.
On Wednesday, November 29, 2006, a Public Advisory Committee meeting for
North Domingo Baca Park was held at the Covenant United Methodist Church.
The purpose of the meeting was to present the preliminary design concepts
for Phase 5 of the project - AREAS OF PLAY. Colleen Frenz, Division Manager
for the Department of Municipal Development and Chris Green, Consensus
Planning, made the presentation outlined below:
PROJECT STATUS UPDATE:
Activities over the past year to 18 months have included the following:
* 2006 - Master Development Plan received final Development Review
Board approval;
* 2006 - Replat of the property to define City and AMAFCA properties;
* 2005 - Land Acquisition was completed - approximately 7 acres of
land from AMAFCA which was being reserved for drainage improvements, but is
now available for park development;
* 2006 - Box Culvert construction was completed; and
* Building programming for the multi-generation center - Stages 1 and
2 COMPLETE. Stage 3 in progress.
Chris Green presented the concept for Phase 5, which is to include
approximately 12 acres of improvements north of the recently completed box
culvert, along Corona Avenue. The improvements are to include a lighted
modular skate park, children's play area(s) and picnic facilities, off-leash
dog exercise area, permanent parking along Corona, and temporary parking
along Wyoming for park use and park and ride service. The design is still
conceptual, in that the shapes may still be refined as the design phase
continues. Attached for your review is a PDF of the presentation that was
given at the meeting, and includes the graphics that were presented at the
meeting.
The entire list of Phase 5 - Areas of Play carries an estimated construction
cost of $4.5 - 5 million. There is approximately $800,000 available to
provide for some improvements. Options were discussed as to how the
available funding should be utilized for construction. Options include
focusing on 1 or 2 areas and constructing them in their entirety, or
developing the framework of the entire area in some limited fashion. These
suggestions will be considered as the design process continues. The design
team will present recommendations for improvements at the Schematic Phase in
Spring 2007 and solicit additional input. The schedule for the project is
to start construction Summer 2007 and be complete by December 2007.
