Thanks John. I too noticed how much quieter it was last night until around !:15 AM when I put out my cigar and closed the book and headed for bed. By the way, I think I misspelled Capt Henz" name on the earlier e-mail. Stay alert all

  Subject: RE: [NENA] Where's APD?

        Dear NENA neighbors,

Okay, it's time to give props to APD.

After my email went out June 26, I got a phone call/voice mail that afternoon from Lt. Scott Layfette at Wyoming & Osuna station. He wanted to talk about the concerns in my email. I didn't get a chance to call back that day.

On June 27, I checked email and had many responses from my neighbors. I guess everyone on NENA list is getting copied. If so, thanks to Joe Y. and webmaster. Most of us are experiencing same frustrations.

Then, I got a copy of email from Brad Winter's office which contained a response from APD Commander Bill Henz, Northeast Area, with his phone number. You probably saw that, too.

I called the Commander and left voice mail. Commander Henz called me right back while I was at work. We had a good discussion. I told him we know APD is doing a good job, we just want more "good", more visibility.

The Commander told me APD started "directed activity" in NorEste on June 26. He said APD issued tickets, raised visibility. I told him that's great.

Commander Henz told me APD would continue directed activity in NorEste until July 4. That's great, too, I told him. Go for it.

Then, when I got home from work June 27, I had a return-call voice mail from Lt. Scott Layfette. I called his number back, but it was after 5 pm and I had to leave a voice mail.

But, I'm getting ahead of myself. Also, when I got home from work there was an APD patrol car parked in front of my house on Henriette Wyeth and Oakland. I parked on car pad, got out, went over to patrol car.

Patrolman rolled-down window. I told him my name, that I lived here and did he want to talk to me? He said APD was responding to my email, that he had read my email, and APD was watching the neighborhood. I thanked him and asked his name. He said, "Frank".

I told Patrolman Frank we appreciate his hard work, we appreciate what APD does, and just want more of it in the neighborhood. We had a good, positive conversation. He stayed for awhile and them patrolled the neighborhood.

We called it a day about 10:30 pm and went to bed. The first thing we noticed was how quiet it was on Oakland and Barstow. Normally, on a Friday night, especially since school ended, there is so much traffic and speeding on Oakland/Barstow that we can't keep our windows open during this season. Trust me, last night at 10:30 pm it was as quiet as it is at 3 am. We were amazed. Did anyone else notice the quiet?

Whatever APD started doing the night of June 26 appears to be working from my point of view. What do the rest of you think?

I want to thank Patrolman Frank, Commander Henz, Lt. Scott Layfette, other APD officers and patrolman who are helping to resolve our concerns. And, thanks to my neighbors who took the time to share their experiences in these emails. Let's all keep up the good work.

        John

PS: Just got off the phone with Lt. Layfette (not sure if misspelling name). Another pleasant, concerned APD officer. We discussed my email. I thanked him for his work and attention to our concerns. He asked if there was anything else APD could do. I recommended that during this "100 nights" campaign, APD set-up sobriety check-points on Paseo/Barstow, or Paseo/Wyoming, or other cross-streets into NorEste and check for underage drinking/driving/criminal activity. I got a name and phone number for DWI Unit. I will make the call.

To add to this...
My sons car was broken into (driver's side window smashed in) on Thursday
6/26-6/27 night (I live on Desert Eagle Rd), his Ipod was stolen. This is
the 2nd window in a month...The only patrols I see are the two officers that
live on the street.

What we need is a donut shop or coffee house next door to the church on
Oakland just west of Wyoming. The idea that there is a police substation
located at the fire house at Wyoming/Corona is a joke. Perhaps we could as
for some kind of video surveillance system, like a hoodlum cam or something
be installed. That's what APD has done for traffic enforcement.

An APD senior officer, not sure of rank, lives on the corner of Morris
Rippel and Georgia O'Keefe. Maybe he could provide insight into the all
too
obvious lack of a police presence in our area. Oh wait, that take home
UNMARKED APD SUV (I'm guessing $45K minimum worth of tax dollars) parked in
front of his house is supposed to be a deterrent in and of itself.

Sincerely,

Rod Adams

Oakland resident.

Dear Neighbors:

I'm getting frustrated with criminal activity increase in our neighborhood,
as well as the apparent lack of APD patrol/visibility in NorEste Estates.
So, I need to ask, "Are we getting our fair share of APD services for the
taxes we pay?" Here's why:

Chapter one: I'm off work, at home June 23-26, and haven't seen one APD
patrol car come thru. What's got me amped?

1.	Feb 2007 - My company car was stolen from in front of home (parked
on car pad in front of garage), I reported it to APD, nothing done.
2.	May 2008: New company car broken into, items stolen, I reported it
to APD, nothing done;
3.	Conversations with neighbors who experienced similar crimes, they
reported crimes to APD, nothing done. They think it doesn't do any good to
report to APD.

Has APD increased patrols/visibility in neighborhood as a result? If so, I
haven't seen them. I'd like to know if I'm wrong.

Now, I've had more recent happenings, see below.

Chapter two: June 26, 7:45 am, I'm outside on Oakland and Henriette Wyeth
NE. I see white 2-door import automobile driving up and down streets.
Automobile has NM plate HCH 901, 2 males in car.

They drive north and south on Henriette Wyeth NE, north and south on streets
west of Henriette Wyeth NE, drive east on Oakland to streets east of Barstow
and north-south on those streets. They drive back to west on Oakland, cross
Barstow and drive by my house. I signal them to stop.

They stop, passenger rolls-down window. I look at both: two (2) Hispanic
males, driver is larger of two, passenger thin; both have dark hair cut
close to scalps, both wearing t-shirts, numerous tatoos on their arms,
passenger-side male has cut above eyebrow on right side of face. I ask them
what's going on, tell them I've seen them driving up and down streets.

Passenger says they're looking for his "auntie's house". I
ask him what's
her name, he says "Michelle". I ask for address, tell them I'm
block
captain, maybe I can help locate auntie's house.

Passenger says he doesn't know address, says he will call her. Passenger
uses cell phone to place call, no answer. I ask passenger for last name of
auntie, he hesitates, then says, "Michelle Wilson". I tell him
we're
watching, we've had lots of crimes in neighborhood. I tell him we'll
check
"Michelle Wilson" name against neighborhood list.

Driver doesn't say anything. Passenger says, "oh' , then they
drive off.

Anybody know someone who lives in Nor Este whose name is "Michelle
Wilson"?
If so, I'd like to talk to her.

Chapter three: I haven't been sleeping well, waking-up between 1 and 2 am.
June 23 and 24, I'm awake and looking outside. I see someone walking north
on Barstow sidewalk, person turns east on Oakland walks east on sidewalk. I
lost sight. Person walks back into sight. Person walks west on sidewalk,
crosses Barstow, and continues walking west down middle of Oakland street
past my house. I eventually lose sight. Appeared to be a male. Is it normal
behavior to be walking our streets between 1 and 2 am?

Chapter four: Next time someone walks by my house at this time, and I'm
awake, I'll go out and ask him/her what's going on.

I'd like to hear from others on this email list, including APD
representatives and Brad:

1.	Is this kind of crime and "do nothing" attitude getting
out-of-hand?
2.	As neighbors, are we doing our fair share of work to stop or control
this?
3.	Are we getting our fair share of APD patrols and visibility?
4.	Should we expect more from ourselves and APD?
5.	If YES to No. 4, what has to be done?

Thanks,

John
